    Remarks: 
    Erected under the auspices of the Rochester Historical Society, the Rochester Chapter, Empire State Society and the Sons of the American Revolution, the plaque honors Nathaniel Rochester (1752-1831), a Colonel during the American Revolution after whom the City of Rochester is named. The plaque was designed by the Gorham Company in New York and cast by their foundry in Providence. At the time of the dedication, the Mechanics Institute was known as the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanical Institute.
