Description:
A figure of a Confederate soldier, dressed in a military uniform that includes a hat, boots, and shoulder bag hanging from his proper left shoulder, stands at parade rest holding the barrel of a musket with both hands. The figure is placed atop a multitiered base that is decorated on its front upper part with a relief of crossed flags and rifles. One of the sides of the midsection of the base is decorated with laurel branches and crossed swords. The base is surrounded by low chained fence.

Remarks:
Sculpture erected by the Palmyra Confederate Monument Association and its friends in memory of the ten Confederate soldiers executed at Palmyra on October 18, 1862 in what became known as the "Palmyra Massacre." IAS files contain a related excerpt from the Missouri Historical Review, 1924-1925, pg. 582; and a related article from the Palmyra Spectator, Feb. 27, 1907.
