Located Marion County Courthouse, Austin & South Polk Streets, Jefferson, Texas
Remarks:
The sculpture was installed by the Dick Taylor Camp, United Confederate Veterans, in memory of Marion County soldiers who died during the Civil War. It was originally placed in a small park on the north side of Broadway, at the corner of Line and beginning of Polk Street. During the 1930s it was moved to the grounds of the Marion County Courthouse. The sculpture was most likely designed by Llano, Texas artist Frank Teich, who designed other Civil War sculptures in the area. It was fabricated at Teich Monument Works. The sculpture was repaired around 1985. IAS files contain a related excerpt from Fred Tarpley's "Jefferson: Riverport to the Southwest," Austin, TX: Eakin Press, 1983, pg. 204-210; and an article from the Marshall News Messenger, May 5, 1985.
