Description:
Mounted on a tall, square shaft is a standing figure of a uniformed Civil War soldier. He wears a cap and a greatcoat with a short cape. He holds the barrel of his rifle with both hands at chest level, the stock of the rifle resting by his proper right foot. A scabbard is attached to his proper left waist. The upper column is decorated with reliefs of crossed rifles, an anchor, crossed sabers, and crossed cannons. On each face of the column is a blocked out shield of stars and stripes, with a polished cannonball on each corner of the ledge. The lower base is multitiered and rough-edged.

Remarks:
The monument commemorates the Civil War soldiers and sailors of Marion, New York. It was erected by Love F. Seymour in memory of her grandparents, Eli and Margaret Green. About 1889, when the cemetery was enlarged, it was decided to set aside a lot for the monument. The monument has a "twin" in Dansville, New York (see IAS NY001157),
