    Remarks:
Reportedly, this is the first known use of Alabama marble for statuary purposes. The work was done by stone cutter David Herd, son of George Herd, an emigrant from Scotland and also a stone cutter. David carved the figure, but is said to have paid someone else to do the hair. IAS files include brief history of Herd family. The statue was in the family collection, prior to its placement on the grave. Information on the sculpture can be found at the B. B. Comer Memorial Public Library, Sylacauga, Alabama. For related reading see: Alabama Historical Review, Vol. III, no. 2 (July 1950), pg. 183.
