Description:
Two bronze figures stand atop a granite exedra bench. The figures include a winged angel with arms outstretched to embrace a soldier. The soldier is dressed in uniform, with helmet, and holds a rifle, with butt end resting on the ground. The figures are mounted in the center of a granite exedra that includes a commemorative text plaque with bronze eagle.

Remarks:
The sculpture commemorates World War I veterans and was erected by the Burns Post, No. 338, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Marathon County. It cost $20,000 and was dedicated on Memorial Day in 1923. It was originally located in Courthouse Square, but was moved to the grounds of the present courthouse in 1954. The figures are by Carl A. Heber and were cast by Bureau Brothers. The granite work was done by Herman Norde.
