Description:
A young, uniformed Civil War soldier stands leaning on the barrel of his musket, grasping it with both hands. He wears a cap and a knee-length coat with a short cape draped back over his proper right shoulder. There is a pouch attached to his belt on the front, and another on his proper right hip. The soldier is mounted on a tall square base adorned with ornamental scroll work on each side. A relief of a rifle and a saber crossed through a wreath appears on the front of the base. Military insignias appear on each side of the base.

Remarks:
The monument commemorates Civil War soldiers from Alstead, New Hampshire. It was erected by the W. S. Hancock Corps No. 66, WRC (Womens Relief Corps), with fund raising beginning in May of 1911. The cost of the memorial was $1,750 for the monument and $81 for the bronze plaque. The monument was funded through private contributions, a $500 appropriation from the Town of Alstead, $500 from by C. N. Vilas, and $75 from the W. S. Hancock Post No. 9. The monument was dedicated on Flag Day, June 14, 1917. For related information see: Alstead Annual Report 1916; and Bellows Falls Times, June 7 and 14, 1917.
