    Description: 
    A heroic-sized eagle, looking to its proper left side with wings outspread. The bird stands on a rock and grasps the American flag in its talons. The flag drapes over the base. The base plaque includes the words "The World War/1917-1918," the Seal of the Borough of Madison encircled by a holly wreath (symbol of victory), and flanked by the symbols of the American Army and that of the Navy. A Horn of Plenty is at the bottom.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture was created to honor those who served in World War I. The sculpture, which cost $8,000, was funded by public subscription. It took Mr. Henry L. Servoss, Chairman of the Citizens' Committee, five years to raise the necessary amount. The memorial design and construction was done by and under the supervision of Hoggson Brothers of New York City. Modelling of the tablets and the eagle was done by Rochette & Parsini of New York City. The granite pedestal was furnished by the North State Granite Company of Mount Airy, North Carolina. The bronze work was done by William H. Jackson Company of Brooklyn, New York.
    IAS files include transcriptions of the text found on 8 surrounding plaques mounted on memorial trees around the World War I statue; and full text of base plaques. IAS files also contain excerpt from Virginia L. Bostick's "The History of Public Monuments & Sculpture of Morris County, New Jersey," New Jersey State Council on the Arts, 1978.
