Remarks:
The sculpture was given to Joseph Clisby, publisher of the Macon Telegraph, by a New York City in-law in the late 1850s. At some point between 1858 and 1860, Clisby had the eagle installed on the roof of the news building, which was located at 596 Cherry Street. It remained there until 1881 when Clisby stepped down as publisher. It is unclear where the sculpture was located between 1881 and August of 1938, when Joseph Clisby presented it to W. T. Anderson, publisher of the Macon Telegraph and News.
In 1938, the sculpture was placed on an exterior porch of the Telegraph and News building at 456 Cherry Street. By the 1950s, the eagle was relocated to the roof of that building. On February 3, 1961, the sculpture was agin relocated, this time placed atop the roof of the newly constructed Macon Telegraph and News Building on 596 Cherry Street. It was regilded prior to its reinstallation on the new building. In 1988/89, the sculpture was restored by Alexandra Klingelhofer of Klingelhofer Associates, and Gary Blackburn, and moved indoors to its current site, the Macon Telegraph building on Broadway. Throughout the years the image of the gilded eagle has come to symbolize the Macon Telegraph and News. Golden Eagle Awards are now given out every year to area high school seniors who have excelled academically.
