    Description:
A multicolored, four-sided sculpture with bas-relief panels on each side, atop a truncated pyramidal pedestal set on a low circular base. Each bas-relief panel depicts in color a figure of importance to the history and culture of New Mexico. Each bas-relief is framed by decorated columns and panels, with the panel beneath bearing a legend. One panel depicts a conquistador dressed in a helmet and body armor, with a battle-ax and a cross in the background above his shoulders. Another panel depicts in profile a Franciscan monk wearing a hooded robe and holding an open book. Another panel depicts the Virgin Mary dressed in a blue robe, wearing a gold crown and holding a gold rosary. The fourth panel depicts a Pueblo Indian wearing a yellow shirt with a silver necklace and mauve headband. On each face of the pedestal is an inset bas-relief in color of a flowering desert plant.

    Remarks:
Commissioned by Los Caballeros, a local Santa Fe celebration group, and the Hilton Hotel of Santa Fe. In 1993, Leopaldo Romero, a local artist, painted over the sculpture's pigmented concrete with bright colors. Marks on the first side of the base suggest that a plaque once mounted there has been removed. The Virgin Mary is also known in parts of New Mexico as La Conquistadora.
