    Remarks:
These fiberglass lions are replacements for the original concrete lions erected by Edward G. Lewis in 1909 at a cost of $50,000. The sculptor of the original lions was George Julian Zolnay. Thomas C. Young of Eames & Young architectural firm designed the pylons. Severe deterioration of the original concrete lions caused the City of University City to give the originals to the Missouri Historical Society (see IAS 76000984). IAS files contain copies of newspaper articles from the St. Louis Post Dispatch, Sept. 26, 1974; St. Louis Globe Democrat, Nov. 26, 1976; and the St. Louis Post Dispatch, Dec. 12, 1976, all of which discuss needed repairs to the pylons. IAS files contain copy of article from the St. Louis Rehabber (Feb. 1983), which discusses creation of the original lions. IAS files also contain transcriptions of nearby plaques.
