    Description: 
    A standing portrait of Robert Treat Paine with a quill pen in his proper right hand and the Declaration of Independence in his proper left hand. Paine wears a long cloak and stands with his proper right foot stepping forward over the front edge of the bronze base. The sculpture rests atop a tall Red Beach granite base adorned with a bronze shield and a band of leaves around the top. Beneath the Red Beach granite is a circular base rimmed in Rockport granite.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture was initiated by the Taunton Historical Society, the Sons of the American Revolution, and the Daughters of the American Revolution. The total cost of the moument was $15,000. An inscription plaque located on a rock just in front of the base reads: ON THIS SPOT/THE TAUNTON PATRIOTS/RAISED THE UNION FLAG/ON OCTOBER 21, 1774/TAUNTON HISTORICAL COMMISSION/1970. Additional information on the statue is available in the Taunton Daily Gazette, Nov. 15, 1904. IAS files contain a copy of the Massachusetts Historical Commission Form C - Monuments questionnaire dated July 2, 1976.
