Inscription:  (Carved on base front:) ERECTED BY THE TOWN OF SWANTON/in memory of/HER PATRIOT SOLDIERS/who fell in the/WAR OF THE REBELLION (Base inscribed on three sides with the names of 29 soldiers, their rank, regiment and place of death and date. Description:  A "Goddess of Liberty," standing holding a flag in her proper left hand. The monument was erected by a town vote at a cost of about $2,000. It was done in memory of the soldiers from Swanton who died in the Civil War in 1861.
