(Carved on base front:) ERECTED BY THE TOWN OF SWANTON/in memory of/HER PATRIOT SOLDIERS/who fell in the/WAR OF THE REBELLION (Base inscribed on three sides with the names of 29 soldiers, their rank, regiment and place of death and date.

Remarks:
IAS files contain information from: Perry, John B., and George Barney, "History of the Town of Swanton," Swanton, VT, 1882, pg. 1063. The monument was erected by a town vote at a cost of about $2,000. It was done in memory of the soldiers from Swanton who died in the Civil War in 1861. It was the first major outdoor commission for the Swanton native, Daniel J. Perry.
