IAS files contain the Columbus Republic (Brown County, IN), Feb. 23, 1985 and Brown County Democrat (IN), ca. Feb. 1985. Articles discuss the addition of this piece to the National Register of Historic Places, December 1984. Cross carved the piece in exchange for road taxes he owed the county. It is believed that a county road superintendent named George Summa or Sumney modeled for the piece. The piece was originally on a wooden post 100 yards west of the present location. The land was formerly the property of Thomas A. Hendricks.
