IAS files contain copies of Atwater, Francis, "History of Southington, Conn.," Meriden, CT: The Journal Press, 1924, pg. 356, 357, with a historical photograph of Captain Lawrence O'Brien, who erected the monument, standing next to it on its original base. The original concrete base was replaced in 1971. IAS files also contain David F. Ransom, Historical and Architectural Resources Survey of Southington, Statewide Historic Resources Inventory, Hartford: Connecticut Historical Commission, 1985, Inventory form #129.
The monument was erected by the Irish Historical Society of Providence, in recognition of the fact that an Irish brigade accompanied Rochambeau's army, when he stopped in Southington in June 1781 on his way to Yorktown, and again in November 1782 on his return.
