Description:
The sculpture depicts Little Balser Brent, the hero of Charles Major's 1901 book "The Bears of Blue River," a story about an Indiana boy's adventures with bears while growing up along the Blue River in early 19th century Indiana. Little Balser is seen dressed in buckskin, two bear cubs held up in his hands, and his back against the side of a rock. The sculpture is installed atop a limestone base surrounded by a low wrought iron fence.

Formerly located Charles Major Elementary School, Shelbyville, Indiana until 1980.
Remarks:
This sculpture honoring Indiana author Charles Major was created by the daughter of Laura Stout, a former Shelbyville, Indiana neighbor of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Major. The sculpture was initially installed at the Charles Major Elementary School in Shelbyville, but was moved to its current site in 1980 when the school was modified to serve as a senior citizens apartment house. A bronze inscription plaque on the left side of the fence surrounding the sculpture reads: IN TRIBUTE TO-/CHARLES MAJOR/-NATIVE SON-/-AUTHOR IF-/THE BEARS OF BLUE RIVER. The inscription on the back of the fence reads: PRESENTED TO/THE CITY OF SHELBYVILLE, IND./AUGUST - 1980 - BY/D. & T. FENCE CO./DAVID NEW - TODD HARDIN.
