Totem pole which narrows towards the top is carved in the Haida Indian style. Three watchmen at top look to the north, south and to the sea. Chinook Chief Comcomly holds a salmon as a symbol of goodwill and welcome. Tom McKay, a nineteenth century settler, wears a top hat and frock coat. A beaver with prominent incisors holds a stick above his cross-thatched tail. The beaver, Oregon's state symbol, represents industriousness. A grizzly bear, symbolizing great strength, protects a smaller human figure.
