A Civil War soldier stands dressed in a cape and knee-length coat, atop a tall column. The figure clasps the barrel of a rifle near the top with both hands, the butt of which rests near the front of the proper right foot. The sculpture is placed atop a tall column, and multitiered base that consists of a polished die, a decorative plinth, and a tall polished column. Each side of the plinth is decorated with carved relief emblems: a cannon and flag; an anchor and rope; on guns and crossed swords, and, a wreath.

The sculpture was presented by William Eaton as a memorial to his father, James R. Eaton on May 30, 1911, and was erected in memory of the soldiers and sailors from Sandwich who defended the Union during the Civil War. The sculpture was dedicated on Memorial Day, 1911. IAS files contain an article from an unidentified Boston newspaper dated May 28, 1911; and a copy of the dedication program.

The sculpture is listed as Sandwich Historic Commission, Asset #267; and is located in a National Register Town Hall Square Historic District.
