    Remarks:
Statue was erected at what was once the local railroad depot by the Lamar County Historical Society in observance of the City's centennial. It commemorates the town's founder, Thomas Melville Purves. (In the 1870's, Purves acquired a land grant. In 1883, when the railroad came through town, and gained right-of-way through his property, they erected a station and sign, with the mis-spelling Purvis, which became the town's name.
