Description:
Full-length figure of Samuel Champlain stands on a tapered pedestal on a terrace overlooking Lake Champlain. The figure wears a full solider's uniform whose items include a sword, arquebus, breastplate, helmet, cloak, doublet and boots. There is a crouching male Indian figure on the front of the pedestal. The figure has a bow and shield and wears a feathered headdress. He is placed at the prow of a canoe which is adorned with various trophies. The upper part of the pedestal is decorated with relief swags of Indian corn.

Remarks:
The monument, which cost an estimated $20,263.51, was commissioned by the Lake Champlain Tercentenary Commission to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the discovery of Lake Champlain by French soldier Samuel Champlain. The monument was designed by Dillon, Mclellan and Beadel. Heber sculpted the figures of Champlain and the Indian and the canoe. Booth Brothers and Hurricane Isle Granite Co. did the granite work and bronze decoration. IAS files contain an excerpt from "The Champlain Tercentenary: final report of the New York Lake Champlain Tercentenary Commission," (Albany, NY: J. B. Lyon Company, 1913).
