    Description: 
    Octagonal stele whose decorative images include double wreathes of local leaf motif at top, the coat of arms of France and a Bible. The front side with the coat of arms faces towards France.

    Remarks: 
    Monument marks what is thought to be the site of Charlesfort, a French fortification built by Jean Ribault in 1562. Katherine B. Mazyck composed the inscription on the front of the stele, and John Bennett composed the inscription on the reverse. IAS files contain an excerpt from the 1925 "Transactions of the Huguenot Society of South Carolina."
