(Founder's mark illegible:) Eck Willis Inc., 19?8 (On plaque, raised letters:) IN MEMORIAM/U.S.S. MAINE/DESTROYED IN HAVANA HARBOR/FEBRUARY 15TH 1898/THIS TABLET IS CAST FROM METAL RECOVERED FROM THE U.S.S. MAINE (On shield:) PATRIOTISM/DEVOTION Founder's mark appears.

Relief plaque is installed on a fabricated cannon. An allegorical female figure holding a shield stands on the far right of the plaque. Her proper right arm is extended outward. She wears a Classical garment and her hair is swept up. Most of her torso is obscured by a round shield held in her proper left hand. A sinking ship, the Maine, can be seen the background. There is a single palm frond on the far left side.
