    Remarks:
The idea for the monument, which cost $700, originated with the City Businessman's League. Erected in 1904, it originally had a bronze finish and marks the location of the first fire station in Orangeburg (demolished in 1902). The original monument, which stood 14 feet high, had drinking fountains and horse water troughs on the base. IAS files contain a copy of an undated newspaper clipping which shows the statue in the plaza with the original base. The statue was moved about 1935 because of increased traffic, and was subsequently moved in 1946 and placed at the Southwest corner of the fire station on Meddleton Street.
