Description:
A Civil War infantryman stands atop a tall shaft, holding the barrel of a rifle with both hands, proper left over proper right. The butt of the gun rests in front of his proper right foot. The figure is dressed in military attire.

Remarks:
The monument was erected as a tribute to the soldiers who enlisted in the Civil War from Jerome township. The monument cost approximately $1,500 and was funded through the bequest of Robert L. Woodburn and private citizen contributions. The names of four hundred Jerome township soldiers are inscribed on the monument. The shaft contains a time capsule with: roster of all soldiers who enlisted from Jerome township; names of the committee who had charge of the monument's erection; photographs of sixty Civil War veterans; names of all school children in the township; names of the subscribers to the monument fund; copies of songs sung by children at the dedication, and dedication program. IAS files contain transcription of base text and excerpt from Col. W. L. Curry's "History of Union County, Ohio," B. F. Bowen & Co., Inc., 1915, pg. 364-371.
