The grotto originally housed a statue, now missing. The grotto is on the former grounds of St. Mary's Academy, (also known as Old Saint Mary's School), founded in 1846. IAS files contain excerpt from Carol Wells' "Cane River Country, Louisiana," Natchitoches, LA: Northwestern State University Press, 1979, pg. 73, which gives history of the Academy. IAS files also contain a photocopy of a historic postcard from the Millspauch Collection, NSU Research Center Archives, which shows statue still located in grotto.
