Remarks:
IAS files contain several related articles from the Middlebury Register, including March 14, 1941 and Aug. 29, 1941, which give the commissioning history. The memorial was erected as part of Middlebury's observance of the Vermont Sesquicentennial Year. Pierre Zwick of Burlington, head of the Federal Arts Project for Vermont, designed the memorial. The statuary work was done by T. A. Campbell, of the Houlihan Shop, in Center Rutland. The monument was erected through the W.P.A. (Works Progress Administration). Federal Works Project money paid for the design and sculpture of the relief tablet and labor used in preparing the site. The work is sited on Route 7, across from the Charter House in which the Middlebury College Charter was signed ca. 1800. The memorial commemorates Emma Hart Willard, who came to Middlebury in 1807 to take charge of the Female Academy. In 1818, she authored a charter for women's education and later founded the Emma Willard School in Troy, New York, the first normal school in the United States.
