Description:
A standing figure of a uniformed Civil War soldier is mounted atop a square column with a peaked cornice. The soldier has a moustache and goatee and wears a cap, with a short cape pushed back over his coat. He holds the barrel of his rifle with both hands at chest level, the stock resting by his proper right foot. The bottom section of the monument is multitiered.

Remarks:
The monument commemorates Civil War soldiers, and it was erected by the citizens of Marathon, New York. The $1,000 cost was paid by the Women's Relief Corps in 1892-1893, and the monument was ordered from A. C. Robacher in early 1893. It was dedicated on Memorial Day, May 30, 1893. IAS files contain: Cortland Evening Standard, May 31, 1893, pg. 4, 6, discussing the dedication; excerpt from E. L. Welch's "Marathon NY,"("Grip's" Historical Souvenir, Series No. 9) Syracuse, NY, c. 1901, pg. 6, 69, 70.
