Inscription:  (On plaque below the relief map, raised:) ROUTES OF THE ARMIES OF/GENERAL JOHN SULLIVAN/AND/GENERAL JAMES CLINTON/1779/AN EXPEDITION AGAINST THE HOSTILE INDIAN/NATIONS WHICH CHECKED THE AGGRESSIONS OF/THE ENGLISH AND INDIANS ON THE FRONTIERS/OF NEW YORK AND PENNSYLVANIA, EXTENDING/WESTWARD THE DOMINIONS OF THE UNITED STATES./ERECTED BY THE/STATE OF NEW YORK/1929 (On the back of the stele is another plaque with text related to the Battle of Newtown 1779) unsigned Description:  Relief busts of General John Sullivan and General James Clinton encircled with wreaths on a plaque. Between the wreaths is an eagle with wings outspread and crossed flags on triangle-tipped flag sticks held in its claws. Below the wreaths is a relief map of the area now known as New York State and Pennsylvania reaching as far north as Forts Oswego and Stanwix, west to Fort Niagra and south to Wyoming and Easton. Map figures include foot soldiers, Indians, and mounted troops. The plaque is attached to a stele.
