    Remarks:
The marker notes the birthplace of John Chapman who has often been referred to as Johnny Appleseed. Although he was born in Leominster, he spent his life in the frontier settlements along the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, collecting apple seeds from the refuse of cider presses and distributing the seeds to the pioneers. This sculpture, installed by the Leominster Historical Society, replaces an earlier one that was damaged by vandals after it was erected by the City of Leominster in 1940. IAS files contain a copy of the Massachusetts Historical Commission Form C - Monuments questionnaire. For additional information see the Leominster Daily Enterprise, June 1, 1963.
