    Description:
Atop a tall shaft stands a classically draped female holding a sword in front of her with her proper right hand and a shield in her proper left. A crown is upon her head. The sculpture is mounted atop a four-sided tapered shaft with beveled corners set upon a base. The top of the shaft is draped by a cloth.
Two soldiers flank the base of the shaft. Each figure is mounted in front of an arched niche. On the east side stands a Civil War general wearing a beard and mustache. He grips the handle of his sword with both hands in front of him. The point of the sword rests on the ground. On the west side stands a rifleman with both hands resting on butt of an upturned gun. The barrel tip of the gun is grounded at his feet. "U.S." appears on his belt buckle and he wears a three-quarter length coat and a cap. One side of the base is decorated with a relief of an eagle with its wings spread and the words "E PLURIBUS UNUM" on a rippling ribbon. Behind the eagle are two crossed flags. The flags are furled and tied together with a ribbon. The corners of the base are decorated with upright cannon barrels in relief.

    Remarks:
The sculpture was a gift to the Village of Sandy Hill from Dr. Erskine G. Clark in honor of the soldiers of Washington County who fought during the Civil War. A plaque commemorating those from Kingsbury who were killed during World War I was installed on the right side of the base in 1921. In 1925, a second plaque was added to the base by the Jane McCrea Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in honor of Lafayette and his service to the United States. It was installed on the 100th anniversary of Lafayette's visit to the area in June 1825. IAS files contain a complete transcription of names listed on World War I plaque.
