Inscription:
(Base front:) Erected under the auspices of the/13th Vermont Regimental Association/and presented to the Town of Highgate/ July 12, 1911 by/Henry Benjamin Meigs, Company K, 13th Vermont Volunteer Infantry/to the honor of the Patriotic Soldiers of Highgate. For our Independence Sarg. Benjamin Stone Meigs, a soldier of the Revolution and with Washington at Valley Forge./John Johnson at Brandywine, Germantown and Monmouth. (The other sides of the base list 196 names of soldiers in the Civil War, 5 soldiers in the Spanish-American War, the War of 1812 and the Mexican War)
Description:
A soldier in Civil War uniform, standing at parade rest. He holds a rifle in front of him. The upper die bears portraits in bas-relief of Lincoln, Grant, Sherman and Sheridan; and the middle die is ornamented with G.A.R. badge, crossed muskets, crossed swords and crossed canon. The base is inscribed with the names of the principle battlefields in which Highgate soldiers fought - Gettysburg, Wildnerness, Petersburg, and Appomattox. The plinth contains memorials to Sergeant Benjamin Stone Meigs and others who fought in the War of 1812-1814.
