Description:
Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla stands with a Christian flag and staff in his proper left hand and a quill in his proper right hand. He wears a mid-calf length coat with lapels, with a belt around the waist, tied on the proper left. The sculpture is mounted on a rectangular tapered base, painted white. The sculpture is surrounded by a wrought iron fence.

Remarks:
The statue commemorates Father Hidalgo, the city and county's namesake.
It was presented to the city and county by the bordering Mexican state of Tamaulipas. IAS files contain material written by archivist David Mycue. For additional information see Hubert J. Miller's "Padre Miguel Hidalgo; Father of Mexican Independence," Edinburg, TX: Pan American University Press, 1986; and Edinburg Daily Review, March 14, 1976. Unpublished information on Father Hidalgo is also on file at the Texas Historical Commission, the Hidalgo County Historical Commission, and at the Hidalgo County Historical Museum.
