    Full-length figure of a uniformed Union soldier stands atop a square pedestal on a tiered base. The figure holds his rifle in front of him with both hands around the barrel and the butt on the ground.

    Remarks: 
    Commissioned under the auspices of the George F. Shepley Post No. 78, Grand Army of the Republic and the George F. Shepley Womens' State Relief Corps No. 39. The cost of the monument was $1,972.25. A total of $2,300 was raised, including an allocation of $500 from the Town of Gray. The surplus funds was used to add a concrete curb and an iron railing. In the autumn of 1984, the monument was moved back twenty feet to accommodate a traffic island. IAS files include an excerpt from "History, Records and Recollections of Gray, Maine, vol. 1," by George T. Hill, related articles from the Portland Evening Express, Sept. 27, 1984, Oct. 2, 1984 and Oct. 3, 1984 and correspondence from the Gray Historical Society.
