Erected by the Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO) as part of the Lewis and Clark celebration in 1945. The land was donated by the Elks Club and financial and in-kind donations were made by Holm Construction, Montana-Dakota Utilities Company, who transported the log from the Sullivan Ranch, Burns Creek area, and Andrew Larson. As a Bicentennial project, the Chapter A PEO financed a wrought-iron fence for the monument. The fence was made and installed by Robert Stolz's welding class at Dawson County High School.
