Remarks:
The memorial commemorates the eight men of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), who died in the Pepper Hill forest fire on Oct. 19, 1938. It also recognizes the firefighting and ambulance crews from CCC who responded to the fire and assisted the injured. The memorial's stonework was constructed and erected by enrollees of Camp S-132. The plaque was funded by contributions of CCC members and camp officials of the North District of Pennsylvania. The memorial was dedicated on Oct. 19, 1939, on the one year anniversary of the fire. For related information see Hunt's Run Echo Company 1321 vol. 5, no. 10 (Oct. 19, 1939). IAS files contain transcription of names on plaque, and excerpt from "History of Cameron County," pg. 59.
