Description:
Figure of a Confederate soldier standing at parade rest atop a tall marble shaft. He wears a uniform which includes a brimmed hat, hip-length jacket, trousers, a sash draped across his proper left shoulder and chest, and a pouch hanging from his proper right shoulder and across his chest. He holds the barrel of a rifle in both hands. The butt of the rifle rests in front of his proper right foot. His proper left foot is forward and his leg is bent at the knee. A tree stump is attached to the back of his proper right leg. The marble shaft is tiered and has a relief of crossed flags at the bottom front.

Remarks:
Monument cost $1,200. Erected by the Robert E. Lee Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the monument was originally located in the middle of Peterson Avenue and Sycamore Street (renamed Ashley Avenue), and later moved to the corner of Peterson Avenue and Ward Street. For an illustration of the sculpture in its orginal location, see Douglas Enterprise (Douglas, GA), March 18, 1992, pg. 3-B. IAS files contain a related excerpt from Isabell Smith Buzzett's "Confederate Monuments of Georgia," Atlanta: Atlanta Chapter No. 18, United Daughters of the Confederacy, 1984, pg. 16; and a related article from the Douglas Enterprise (Douglas, GA) Oct. 12, 1961 which discusses the dedication ceremony.
