    Description: 
    Full-length figure of an early day airman, from the 1930-40s era. He wears a flight jacket and trousers. In his proper left hand he holds a pair of gloves and in his proper right hand he holds a pilots helmet and goggles. On the lower back side of the sculpture is a bas-relief depiction of Icarus. He is shown in flight, with winds attached to his arms. The granite sculpture stands on a polished red granite base.

    The sculpture was commissioned and donated by Harold Thomas Hastings through the Harold Thomas Hastings Trust. Cost of the sculpture was between $200,000 - $250,000. The sculpture is located in the median of the entrance to the Grayson County Airport. IAS files contain copies of related correspondence and dedication ceremony program.
