Description:
Full-length figure of an early day airman, from the 1930-40s era. He wears a flight jacket and trousers. In his proper left hand he holds a pair of gloves and in his proper right hand he holds a pilots helmet and goggles. On the lower back side of the sculpture is a bas-relief depiction of Icarus. He is shown in flight, with winds attached to his arms. The granite sculpture stands on a polished red granite base.

Remarks:
The sculpture was commissioned and donated by Harold Thomas Hastings through the Harold Thomas Hastings Trust. Cost of the sculpture was between $200,000 - $250,000. The sculpture is located in the median of the entrance to the Grayson County Airport. IAS files contain copies of related correspondence and dedication ceremony program. IAS files contain copies of related articles from Sherman-Democrat, June 19, Oct. 12 and 14, 1990.
