    Description: 
    A Civil War soldier stands at parade rest with both hands on barrel of his rifle, the butt of which rests near his proper right foot. The sculpture is mounted upon a shaft with bas-relief symbols on each side. The designs consist of crossed sabers on the east, crossed cannons on the north, an anchor on the west, and crossed muskets on the south. The shaft is set upon a tiered base with rough-hewn sides. The sculpture is enclosed by a granite post and metal rail fence. Parrot guns are positioned at each corner inside the fence.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture cost $4,600. It was installed by the Seth N. Hedges Post No. 216 of the Grand Army of the Republic in memory of soldiers from Dansville who fought during the Civil War. The sculpture was designed and installed by Worden Brothers Monument Manufacturing Company of Dansville. The cannons at each corner of the base were obtained from the Brooklyn Navy yard. Bunnell's "History of Dansville," Dansville, NY: Instructor Publishing Company, 1902, pg. 50; and Marie Preston's "Avon, Heart of the Genesee Country"; and articles from the Dansville Advertiser, Sept. 13, 1900; Genesee Country Express, April 24, 1969; and the Avon Herald News, Nov. 24, 1982.
