    (Small metal tag on paddle:) "Sculptured Advertising" (Plaque on front of base:) THIS MEMORIAL WAS ERECTED BY THE CRANE LAKE/COMMERCIAL CLUB TO COMMEMORATE THE FRENCH CANADIAN VOYAGEORS (sic) WHO/EXPLORED AND OPENED THIS COUNTRY BEGINNING IN THE LATE 1600'S./THOUSANDS OF THESE DAUNTLESS MEN PADDLED THEIR BIRCH BARK/CANOES THROUGH THESE WATERWAYS IN QUEST OF FURS AND/THE NORTHEAST PASSAGE. ONE OF THEIR PORTS WAS AT THE/MOUTH OF THE VERMILLION RIVER IN CRANE LAKE./THE GAY GARB OF THESE COURAGEOUS HAPPY MEN IS TYPIFIED/BY OUR MEMORIAL AS HE STANDS HERE PROUDLY SURVEYING/THE LANDS AND WATERWAYS HE ONCE ROAMED. Founder's mark appears.

    Remarks: 
    The memorial was installed by the Crane Lake Commercial Club in honor of the French-Canadian voyageurs who explored and opened the region around Crane Lake, beginning in the late 1600's. Additional tablets and markers honoring local residents have been placed around the sculpture. IAS files contain related article from Moira F. Harris' "Monumental Minnesota," Pogo Press, 1992, pg. 66-67.
