THIS QUOTATION FROM ANTOINE DE SAINT-EXUPERY'S "THE LITTLE PRINCE" WAS PROBABLY JAMES DEAN'S FAVORITE. IT SEEMED TO HOLD A DEEP AND PRIVATE SIGNIFICANCE FOR HIM AND HE USED IT OFTEN - ESPECIALLY WITH THOSE HE LOVED. WILLIAM E. BURT

    An abstract memorial to actor James Dean comprised of a cut-out rectangular shape that surrounds a tree. A bronze bird, possibly a fallen sparrow, lies between two inscribed text plaques on surrounding cement base.

    Remarks: 
    The memorial was commissioned in 1983 by Japanese businessman Seita Ohnishi and was made in Japan. It commemorates actor James Dean, who died in a car accident Sept. 30, 1955, about 900 yards east of the tree. IAS files contain transcription of text on two nearby plaques. IAS files also contain excerpts from Jack Barth's "Roadside Hollywood," Chicago: Contemporary Books, 1991, pg. 8-9; and Kristan Lawson and Anneli S. Rufus' "America Off the Wall: The West Coast," New York: John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Sources differ on medium of sculpture. SOS! survey lists medium as aluminum; Lawson & Rufus text list media as stainless steel, aluminum and brass.
