    An engraved granite obelisk marks the grave site of Charlemont's first settler, Moses Rice.

    Remarks: 
    Moses Rice was the first settler of the Town of Charlemont. He arrived in 1740-1741, but was driven out by the Native Americans. In 1750, he returned and built a cabin, but on June 11, 1755, he was killed by the Native Americans and his cabin was burned. The memorial was erected by the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association. IAS files contain a copy of the Massachusetts Historical Commission Form C - Monuments questionnaire.
