Remarks:
The sculpture cost $30,000 and was installed by the Chappaqua Historical Society. Greeley lived in Chappaqua during the latter part of his life. As a young man, Greeley worked as a printer in New York City and later became the first president of the Typographical Union. He is perhaps best known as the founder and editor of the New York Tribune where he spoke out against slavery and other injustices. His cry, "Go West, young man!" encouraged citizens to open the resources of the West. Greeley was chief founder of the Republican Party and a prime force behind the nomination of Abraham Lincoln for president. He later ran unsuccessfully for president against Ulysses S. Grant. Greeley died in 1872.
A ground breaking ceremony for the sculpture was held on February 4, 1911 to coincide with the 100th anniversary of Greeley's birth on February 3, 1811. The sculpture was dedicated on Greeley's 103rd birthday, February 3, 1914. The sculpture was installed across from the Chappaqua railroad station overlooking the Greeley homestead. The sculpture was cast by Jno. Williams, Inc. Architect William Henry Deacy designed the base.
