Remarks:
Erected by the Town of Brownfield in honor of its citizens who served in the Civil War. The figure is Daniel Bean, a Brownfield native who enlisted in the Union Army, Company A, 11th Maine Infantry at the age of 15. He was mortally wounded near Bermuda Hundred, Virginia on June 2, 1864 and died four days later. The sculpture was modeled from a photograph of Bean taken by William Brady. This is reportedly the only Civil War monument in Maine whose figure is a likeness of an actual person. IAS files include excerpts from "History of Brownfield, Maine," by William Teg (Cornish, ME: Carbrook Press, 1966) and "Maine in the Civil War: a Bibliographical Guide," compiled by William B. Jordan Jr., Maine Historical Society, 1976.
