Description:
Figure of young soldier in Confederate uniform standing on top of a column. The soldier is wearing the cap of a Union uniform. He carries a knapsack over his proper right shoulder and he holds the barrel of a rifle with both hands, the butt resting on the ground. A sheath for a bayonet is under his proper left elbow, fastened by a belt around his waist. His proper right leg leans against a tree stump. The column combines rough-cut and smooth granite with four inscribed marble plaques at the bottom. Statue is mounted on a stepped base with a carved vine motif, and situated in a grassy area surrounded by eight granite posts with holes for a chain that is missing.

Remarks:
The memorial is dedicated to the 303 soldiers of Marlboro who gave their lives for the cause of the Confederacy. It was sponsored by the Marlboro Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, who ordered it from McNeel Marble Company at a cost of $2,700. IAS files contain article from Charleston News & Courier, April 27, 1937, pg. 8, that says figure on top of monument is in Union uniform, a mistake made by the Italian sculptor. Locals say that only the cap is that of a Union uniform. IAS files contain detailed description of statue and transcription of text on column. IAS files also contain photocopies of historical postcards from the Marlboro County Historical Museum dating back to statue's dedication ceremony in 1907.
