    Description:
An allegorical bronze relief scene of World War I, with honor roll, mounted on granite monument. The scene depicts an allegorical female figure, representing America or Columbia, standing in belted flowing robes. She holds a flagstaff with her proper right hand that is grounded at her proper right foot with the American flag swirling behind her. She rests her proper left hand on top of a shield positioned at her proper left side. She is flanked by a kneeling World War I infantryman on her proper right side, and a kneeling World War I sailor on her proper left side.
The soldier is shown in proper left profile, dressed in a helmet, boots, leggings and a hip-length jacket. He holds a rifle with bayonet pointing out and up. Behind him is a battlefield with broken trees, a cannon and a ruined building. The sailor is depicted in proper right profile, dressed in boots, a blouse with scarf and a sailor's cap. He holds his rifle with bayonet pointing out and up. Behind him is an ocean scene with two warships. Above the figures is an eagle, seen in profile, with outspread wings.
Below the relief scene is a roll of honor listing names of local men who served during the Civil War, Spanish-American War and World War I. The bronze tablet has a curved top edge and is decorated with a band of leaves down each side. The plaque is mounted on the front of a rock-faced base made of an upright block on top of a shorter, wider block. On the rear of the base is a bronze dedication plaque honoring local men who died during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

    Remarks:
The relief plaque cost approximately $576; the base cost $5,000. The plaque was furnished by the Town of Belmont, and the base by Moses Sargent, in honor of Upper Gilmanton and Belmont boys who fought during the Civil War, the Spanish-American War and World War I. The memorial was dedicated on Armistice Day, November 1919. In 1966, a new bronze plaque was added to the rear of the base, honoring the men and women who served during subsequent wars. In 1966, the relief tablet and stone base were cleaned.
