Description:
A portrait of George Bartholomew wearing a high collar with a necktie and suit coat, over which there is an apron symbolizing his laboratory work in developing cement. In his right hand he holds a pick used to excavate local marl deposits, and in his left hand he holds papers representing his chemistry scholarship in developing cement manufacture. He stands on a piece of concrete scored to resemble the original street pavement, which was stamped with a pattern of dimples to keep horses from slipping.

Remarks:
George Bartholomew invented a composition of concrete durable enough to be used for street pavement. He established the Buckeye Portland Company in 1887 near Bellefontaine. His portrait sculpture was installed on Court Street -- "America's Oldest Concrete Street" in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the building of the first concrete street in the United States.
