    Description: 
    General Emory Upton stands on a projecting base at the front of a large obelisk. He is dressed in a Civil War General's uniform - a knee-length, belted garment with a high collar, a cape, brimmed hat and boots. He holds a sword in his proper left hand, the tip of which rests on the ground near his proper left foot. He holds a scroll in his proper right hand. The obelisk is topped by a bronze eagle, with outstretched wings. The eagle stands atop a ball with four mooring rings.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture cost $15,100. It honors Major General Emory Upton, a Batavia native, who served with distinction during the Civil War and became commandant of West Point. The sculpture also pays tribute to the soldiers, sailors and marines of Genesee County who served in the Civil War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War and in Vietnam. The sculpture was funded by the City of Batavia and the County of Genesee. IAS files contain Genesee County Historical Markers Inventory sheet for the sculpture. IAS files also contain articles from Batavia Daily News, dating from Dec. 8, 1916 through August 26, 1916, which detail funding disputes over the commissioning and selection of the sculpture.
