Twichell Fountain, (sculpture). Artist:  Unknown, sculptor. Title:  Twichell Fountain, (sculpture). Dates:  1898. Medium:  Metal and stone. Dimensions:  Approx. 8 x 4 x 4 ft. Inscription:  (On plaque on side of stone basin:) THIS FOUNTAIN IS DEDICATED/TO THE MEMORY OF/GINERY TWICHELL/BORN IN ATHOL 1811/DIED IN BROOKLINE 1883 unsigned Description:  A slender metal sculpture with a vine-like motif is installed atop a tiny two-tiered metal basin in the center of a square stone fountain basin. Water flows down from the two-tiered metal basin into the large square stone basin. The exterior of the square basin is adorned with a leaf pattern and each side features a small shell basin for animals. Subject:  Homage -- Twichell, Ginery Occupation -- Political -- Congressman Occupation -- Other -- Businessman Object -- Foliage Object Type:  Outdoor Sculpture -- Massachusetts -- Athol Fountain Sculpture Owner:  Administered by Town of Athol, Athol, Massachusetts Located Main Street at the Common, Athol, Massachusetts Remarks:  The fountain was donated in 1898 by the family of Athol native, Ginery Twichell (1818-1881). Twichell began his career as a stagecoach driver, often stopping at a tavern once located near where the fountain is installed. He went on to become president of several railroads and to serve in the U.S. Congress.
