    Description: 
    A replica of a runestone, consisting of a rectangular slab with a somewhat irregular surface mounted on a tiered base that is flanked by two rectangular walls. The base is surrounded by a low stone wall.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture is a replica of a runestone that was found in 1898 by a farmer near Alexandria, Minnesota. The original runestone is 31 inches long, 16 inches wide, 6 inches thick, and weighs 202 pounds. The runestone was translated by H. R. Holland of Wisconsin and reads as follows: 8 Goths and 22 Norwegians on exploration journey from Vinland over the West We had camp by skerries one days journey north from this stone We were and fished one day After we come home found 10 men red with blood and dead Ave Maria Save from evil Have 10 of our party by the sea to look after our ships 14 days journey from this island Year 1362.
