The firebell was purchased in 1918 by Acushnet resident Leonard Keene as a warning bell in the event of fires. He and a neighbor, Levi Hawes, picked the bell up at the New Bedford railroad station (it is believed the bell came from Providence) and attached it to the boulder. The bell has been used only twice for fires. In 1950, it was stolen by youngsters, but was soon returned. In 1960, it was removed from the boulder so that it could be used on a parade float, but was remounted on its boulder. IAS files contain a Massachusetts Historical Commission Form C - Monuments questionnaire dated Jan. 1, 1975.
